The Common Loon in Washington:
A Pictoral Guide, Status and Conservation

This year's NCW Audubon Society program series concludes on Thursday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. with the outstanding wildlife photography of biologistsDaniel Poleschook, Jr. and Virginia (“Ginger”) R. Gummfrom the Loon Lake Wildlife Gallery. Their environmental mission is to observe, document and record the behavior and ecology of common loons, and to coordinate conservation efforts for common loons and other waterbirds. They present their images hoping that viewers will gain a better understanding of the common loon and the conservation it requires, and also the important part everyone has in preserving the environment. The common loon has seen a dramatic decrease in its historic breeding range and its status is now listed as "sensitive" in Washington. The program, free and open to the public, will be held at the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 127 S. Mission in Wenatchee.

Ginger and Daniel have been nature photographers since the early 70’s. They met in 1992 at a nature-photography seminar Daniel was presenting in Seattle; since then, they have photographed together. From 1996 to present they have been specializing in capturing images of common loons and other waterbirds while conducting observations and doing research and conservation work on common loons in the Pacific Northwest. They have given nature-photography and conservation presentations to a vast number of individuals, organizations, nature-photography clubs and wildlife managers throughout the United States, Canada and Africa. Daniel was a photographic tour operator of Daniel Poleschook Nature Photography for several years, which featured nature-photography tours throughout North America and Africa. He was also a column writer of Techniques for Nature Photographers in Nature Photographer Magazine.

Daniel and Ginger had previous professional careers in geology and nursing respectively. In addition to their common loon conservation projects in Washington, Daniel also operates Daniel Poleschook Nature Photography and a new venture, the Loon Lake Wildlife Gallery in Loon Lake, Washington. These companies specialize in publishing nature images and in sales of large prints of wildlife, specializing in waterbirds, and featuring the common loon, the trumpeter swan and the bald eagle as their signature species. Currently, they have over 220 bird species collected that provide images of publishable and saleable quality from North America, Africa, and other foreign countries. They were the exclusive photographers of a recently published book The Call of the Loon. They approach photography as perfectionists with a common passion: capturing wildlife images of high impact, showing artful composition, ideal lighting, crisp detail, with a freedom from distractions. Presenting subjects in action is their continual quest. All of their compositions are authentic. They neither derive or contrive compositions nor photograph at game farms or zoos. They are authors of 12 digital nature photography programs.
